Participate in the LEAP-Ireland Project
24th July 2024
LEAP-Ireland Feasibility trial recruitment now closed.
Recruitment for the LEAP-Ireland feasibility trial is now closed. We would like to thanks all those who contacted us about the study and who went through our screening process.
We are continuing the follow-up assessments of those who agreed to participate in the study and were randomly allocated to the education and exercise intervention or the control (usual care).
About
Gluteal Tendinopathy (GT) is a condition that can cause pain on the outside of the hip. This condition is also known as greater trochanteric pain syndrome or trochanteric bursitis. It is three times more common in women than men, affecting up to 25% of women aged over 40 years and can affect walking, sleep and work and quality of life. A recent study from Australia showed that following 14 sessions of education and specific exercises over 8 weeks, 77% of participants improved up to 1 year later. Our study is assessing if fewer treatments (6 treatments over 8 weeks) of the same exercise and education programme provided in the Australian study could have similar benefits.
By participating in this study you are assisting future research that aims to improve the health care for people with hip pain in Ireland. Your participation is entirely voluntary. You will be allocated to one of our two study groups randomly. This is like tossing a coin, where you have a 50:50 chance of getting option 1 or option 2. Participants in exercise and education group will receive 6 individual physiotherapist visits over 8 weeks and a home exercise program at no cost to you.
You may be eligible if you:
• Are 35-70 years of age
• Have pain on the outside of the hip for a least three months
• Have been diagnosed with Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome/Trochanteric bursitis
• Don’t have hip osteoarthritis
You may be eligible for 6 individual physiotherapist visits that could improve your hip pain.
Treatments will be delivered in one of four physiotherapy clinics located in various northside and southside Dublin locations. These are the following:
